Meet Dr. Richard Liu, D.M.D., M.MedSc
Dr. Richard Liu trained at Harvard for an additional three years beyond dental school to specialize in implants and cosmetic dentistry.
Twice Dr. Liu has been recognized as one of America’s Top Dentists and his cosmetic expertise has made him a regular consultant for the television program ‘Extreme Makeover’.
When Dr. Liu is not seeing patients at his busy Newington practice he is teaching and supervising dental students at Harvard and Tuft’s University Schools of Dental Medicine. He lectures extensively throughout the United States on restorative and cosmetic dental procedures. He has been practicing dentistry for 17 years.
Dr. Liu offers general dentistry for adults and children as well as many advanced and customized cosmetic procedures.
Dr. Liu’s cosmetic work can make a difference in a person’s life in a matter of hours. “I see people who won’t smile and who cover their mouths when they speak. After we design a plan for them and complete the work, their faces just light up when you hand them the mirror. You can see their whole attitude change immediately, and that’s tremendously gratifying.”
Dr. Liu received his Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed three years of specialty training in prosthodontics – focusing on cosmetic dentistry and dental implants – at Harvard University’s School of Dental Medicine. At Harvard, he was also appointed a Research Fellow in Restorative Dentistry and received a Master of Medical Science degree from Harvard Medical School. In addition to his practice, Dr. Liu is currently an associate clinical professor of prosthodontics at both Harvard and Tufts University schools of Dental Medicine.
In addition to his education and research, Dr. Liu credits his artistic talents for the unique ability he has to create smile “makeovers” that are carefully designed for each patient. He’s garnered awards for his watercolor paintings, pencil drawings, and sculptures. “I think the art is a nice complement to the science and mechanics of dentistry,” says Dr. Liu. “To get the best-looking results, you really need a good eye for relating the shape of a person’s teeth to his or her facial profile.”
Thanks to major advances in technology and materials, prosthodontic dental specialists like Dr. Liu can do much more than help you maintain healthy teeth and gums. “I always enjoy watching patients’ self-confidence grow and their outlooks transform as we create smiles they’re proud to show the world,” says Dr. Liu.
